Here’s the cover for the next Talon Stormbringer book, The Screaming Moragul. The story is named after the ghostly ship that will give Talon and his crew trouble from beyond the grave. It’s my version of The Flying Dutchman. The ship is named after a carrion bird of my invention for Llurien, where all the Stormbringer stories are set. Look for this to be released later this year.
The Ever Fiend has been released today! Hopefully this will be the start of a great career. You can help out by grabbing a copy. Click the button to buy from your preferred vendor, or if you’re smarter, you’ll just join my mailing list and get an eBook copy for FREE!
Self-Publishing Review had this to say: “Randy Ellefson has really made himself a name to watch with this title as his debut. With strong writing, strong characters, this is a strong introduction to Talon Stormbringer and what to expect in his upcoming series. This is a wholly professional product with a beautiful cover and a great amount of care taken on the piece throughout. It’s great to see a fantasy read with this amount of love poured into it, with the skill and know-how to make it gleam. A stand-out for dark fantasy, Talon Stormbringer brings the thunder in his first proper outing. Let’s hope to see more of his adventures and misadventures very, very soon! 4.5 stars”
I just got my first editorial review for The Ever Fiend from SPR, at 4.5 stars.
Some of the best comments:
“The Ever Fiend is a fantastic (pun intended) first showing from debuting author Randy Ellefson, starting off the Talon Stormbringer series with a bang. Our anti-hero lead is an enigmatic and charismatic rogue…Talon is a balanced character that can pull the story along on his personality alone. Luckily for Talon, the story doesn’t need the help – it’s a fun, creative world…The writing is generally very strong…The ground it covers is covered extremely well, meeting every major expectation and more which most readers will find extremely satisfying.”

The Epic of Ronyn is now available for pre-order at just $.99! For the first few months, it will only be on kindle so I can take advantage of their KDP Select program. The short story will be released in early November.
I have ten other stories from The Tales of Llurien that I could’ve published instead, but I choose this one because it shows all seven of the humanoid species I created for Llurien in one story. I’ve been creating them for three decades and wanted to get all of them “in print.”
The Ever Fiend, due out next month, only has a few of them, though they are shown in more detail. I’ll be publishing Creating Life (The Art of World Building, #1) by early 2017, too, and wanted a story available to show some of what’s discussed in that volume.
“While most in Talendor slumbered, Talon Stormbringer crept through a hallway dark with flickering shadows, his human ears and eyes alert. He’d already slipped undetected past a jhaikan and a mynx, undeterred by their ferocity and taste for man-flesh. Even the dozen sleeping riven in the courtyard hadn’t given him pause, when even fully armored knights would have turned away. The little monsters were infamous for stirring at the slightest sound and waking to become like a whirling dervish of steel, not unlike what Talon himself could unleash from the sword he gripped in one hand.
Now he heard nothing, not even his own passage, the supple black leather pants and tunic he wore never squeaking as he crept toward the doorway and his prize—the gold figurine of a great bird of prey, said to be magical and worth a fortune. Stories in taverns had piqued his interest but also warned him of the dangers, the greatest of those being the wizard whose white tower he now prowled. Some said Viland Shadowbreaker enjoyed unsavory habits when few were looking, his public persona of benevolent charm masking a dark truth. But men with great secrets often hide things of greater importance than their private sins.”
Publication will be early December, probably the 6th, with pre-orders starting three months before that, in early September. The story has gone into pre-production: beta-readers, editing, proofreading, and formatting.
It will be over a year before The Tales of Llurien itself is published, but I wanted to release another tale this year.
I uploaded the map for The Ever Fiend (Talon Stormbringer, #1) to the website today. Have a look! Now when characters call him “the Nyborian,” you can see where that means he’s from. The story takes place in Talendor and includes a sorelia (one of my races) from the Sorelian Forest.
I should be doing this for every story, including these not only within the books but here on the site.
This will start my publication career – after literally three decades of writing (not just this book, I swear!) and creating the world of Llurien where this takes place. So, you know, I feel no pressure whatsoever.
Only a fool steals from a wizard.
Talon Stormbringer thought he knew the risk of stealing from Viland Shadowbreaker – until he got caught. The wizard will spare him if Talon performs a service – fetch the deadly silver elixir from the Everway, a supernatural land that Talon assumed wasn’t real. Only children believe the stories about what lies within – lost souls, corrupted magic items, and mysterious destinations that most people never escape. Ruling over it all is the Ever Fiend, a bogeyman that people use to scare unruly youngsters into behaving.
Talon agrees to go, if only to stop Viland from doing something unholy with the potent elixir once retrieved. Joining him are a band of people he can’t trust. Their leader, a sorelia with nefarious plans of his own. The sorelia’s battle-trained mynx, a large cat who obeys only its master. An alluring swordswoman who wants to enchant her blades with the elixir. A cocky guard whose bravado might prove more liability than asset. A warrior kryll whose curiosity about the elixir might cost him more than his life. And a tortured Knight of Coiryn who seeks redemption in a place where most are damned. Of all the things they might discover on their journey, one is the most obvious and yet the hardest to learn…
I’ve renamed The Champions Series as The Never Quest Series. The original title was actually Ever Quest, but I learned that’s the name of a computer game and later, books, so that was out. I’ve been trying to think of a good name for a long time and come up short. Hopefully I won’t get sued anyway! What’s in a letter?
The cover for The Ever Fiend (Talon Stormbringer) is done! This is actually a self-portrait. Let me know what you think.
Once I have a blurb written, I’ll launch the book’s page here with more info, including chapter 1. I think publication will be November 1st, with pre-orders starting three months before that, in early August.
The book has gone into pre-production: beta-readers, editing, proofreading, and formatting (print and eBook), though I guess that latter is actually production. I’m excited to launch this career after so many years of work.
